It certainly is a different world.  It sure was strange to see
Bill Gates smiling and holding a Palm Treo in his hand at the press
conference this morning.  While we now have an officially
announced device from Palm, Inc running Windows Mobile 5, I'm doubting
we'll see an iPaq running PalmOS any time soon.

I wonder what Access has up its sleeve to ensure the future of the
PalmOS.  I don't see PalmOS going away, but I wonder where it will
be headed over the next few years as "for Linux" is unveiled and so on.

PalmOS will have a bigger place in history then Apples Newton or Phillips Veo. (Hardware devices with OS) But I see it winding down over the next few years. Access will probably use it for locked down devices running their apps. This is not good news for the 1000's of PalmOs Developers.

My personal suspicion is that Access will finally bring a PalmOS
compatibility layer onto a Linux kernel and with that will introduce a
set of Smartphone APIs to standardize cellphones using PalmOS.
Currently every vendor offering PalmOS based Smartphones has to
redevelop the phone side themselves. Access, with their feet firmly in
the Smartphone industry, should see the value of this.

With the introduction of Linux as a multitasking replacement kernel,
development can become far easier (no 64k memory limits) and a world of
Linux applications would open up.

Gartner Research seems to agree.  Here's a quote from their recent
report.  The start out by talking about what a failure Cobalt was.

"However, since that time, work has started on Palm OS for Linux, which
the analysts believe will be what PalmSource should have been working
on all the time: a low-end operating system, capable of running on a
smartphone that costs less than $100."

Interesting...

If they can pull off a sub $100 smart phone that would be very very interesting. I would say it is at least 3 years away which is two life times in this space.

Or how about the $100 wireless 'notebook' computer from MIT as currently being reported online?

Can run from landline power, battery or a built-in clockwork generator. Runs a version of WinCE and uses flash memory rather than a hard drive...
