I have a Zire 21.  Recently, upon power on, the entire display goes completely black and is thus unreadable.  The unit appears fine apart from the display, for instance, Hotsyncing successfully uploaded data entered into the PDA prior to this problem's manifestation.

This symptom did not occur after any discernable mishandling, (such as exposure to liquids that might have generated a short, or a shock.)

I have tried the reset  button to no avail (though it does reset, as evidenced by the powering off of the display when the button is pressed and held).

I am about to pop the puppy open to see if I can find an obvious short, or perhaps the display cable has somehow slipped in its connector, though I fear a display logic failure.

Questions:

Have you ever run across this problem before, and if so how was it solved?

I am emotionally prepared to commit to buying a replacement, but if a relatively simple part swap (say, 1-2 hours work by an experienced, but non-professional, electronics tinkerer) with an otherwise fried Zire 21 is feasible, I would rather do that.

As I have said before on this forum, my work environment precludes the use of anything more sophisticated than a Zire 21 (nothing with memory stick capability, for instance) so suggestions of "replace with XYZ better model while you are on the market" are not useful.

Thanks.

David

Poopie.

I got the thing open and viola!, the display began working, but it was intermittent.  I reseated the display cables inside of their connectors, but it was still intermittent. Seems to be shock sensitive (just light taps on the plastic around the display make the display act oddly and sometimes wink out completely, and when I put the thing completely together it still exhibited the same behavior. After one tap though it went black again and would not come back (note that black is not the same as blank.)  I think I am gonna have to get a new one and I feel comfortable putting a new display in this one after my experience (or this display in another one) the problem is, I don't know for sure if there is something wrong with the display or with the guts.  I can't see any obvious cold solder joints that could cause the intermittent behavior, but who knows what is going on between the layers of glass in the display.

So, do I take the risk and purchase a non-working one on eBay and start swappnig parts or, do I find a new one someplace? Also, I am still curious if anyone has ever seen or heard of this before.

I'm reading that there is a new Zire (the 22) due out fairly soon. Its reported specs are limited, but it has 32 RAM and will run about $US99. Same report puts a new Tungsten in the stores on October 11th, so the Zire about the same time?

At that cost, is it really worth the sturm und drang of building your own out of parts from eBay?

Nope.  Except maybe as a hobby project for fun that I really don't have time for right now.  I still learned a lot from opening it and working the nifty display connectors.

I found a new in box one for $61 on ebay including shipping and snapped it up.  As for the Zire 22, I will watch for it and see if it is permissible at work.  Maybe I will need another replacement in a year or so.

I love the bare bones of the Zire 21.  I only have to recharge the thing about once every 2 weeks, which is nice. I worry that something with more performance will eat into that.  My ONLY complaint about the Zire 21 is that I wish the alerts could be made louder; a simple perforation pattern over the speaker would probably go a long way. As is if it is completely zipped up in my belt pouch and I am driving or talking, I don't hear it.

Zire 22

Cool. Color display can be useful and more RAM is always nice. As long as they didn't go nuts on backlighting the thing and the processor didn't get much (or at all) beefier, it'll probably still hold charge for most of a week of use, which would be enough for me.  It also does NOT have an expansion slot, which is just what I need it to not have (amongst other things.)  Definitely will be on my list once my replacement 21 is dead.  Honestly though, I can't wait another coupla weeks for an updated model.  I need my PDA NOW!
